Thanjavur Doctor Couple Arrested for Filing False Burglary Report
A doctor couple from Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, has been arrested by police for allegedly filing a false complaint about a burglary at their residence. The incident, which occurred earlier this month, involved exaggerated claims of stolen jewellery that were later found to be untrue.
Details of the False Complaint
On January 8, Dr C Mani, aged 61, who owns a private hospital in Orathanadu, and his wife Dr M Uma Bharathi, aged 58, residents of Parisutham Nagar in Thanjavur, reported to the Town South Police Station that their house had been burgled while they were away. They claimed that the front door lock was broken and that valuable jewellery had been stolen during their absence from January 7.
The couple listed the following items as stolen:
- A 12-sovereign necklace
- An 11-sovereign thali chain
- 12-sovereign bangles
- A 10-sovereign periya chain
- 5-sovereign rings
- 7-sovereign earrings
- 3-sovereign maattal
- Approximately 4kg of silver puja items
This totalled 60 sovereigns of gold and 4kg of silver, leading to the registration of a case based on their complaint.
Police Investigation and Revelations
Following the complaint, a police team led by Inspector C Sudha and Sub-Inspector P Thennarasu initiated an investigation. After examining CCTV footage, they identified a suspect, G Karthik Pandian, aged 41, from Vilangudi in Madurai, and arrested him in connection with the case.
However, during questioning, Karthik Pandian revealed that he had only stolen a few kitchen vessels weighing about 1kg, three bags, and two shirts from the house. He explicitly stated that no gold jewellery or significant silver items were present at the time of the burglary.
Further investigation by Town Deputy Superintendent of Police R Somasundaram and Inspector Sudha uncovered that the couple's jewellery was safely stored at their Orathanadu residence. Inspector Sudha noted, "The couple deliberately exaggerated the loss and concealed the truth despite knowing the facts."
Arrest and Legal Action
Based on these findings, the police arrested Dr Mani and Dr Uma Bharathi for providing false information and causing an unnecessary investigation. A case has been registered against them under sections 212a, 212b, and 229(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
The police emphasised that such actions waste valuable time and resources, diverting attention from genuine cases. Legal proceedings are currently underway, and the couple faces charges related to filing a false complaint.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of honesty in reporting crimes and the consequences of misleading law enforcement agencies.
