A driver was charred to death after his car crashed into the railings of a flyover and caught fire on the Mumbai-Pune highway in Kamshet, approximately 50 kilometers from Pune, in the early hours of Tuesday.
Victim identified
The Kamshet police identified the deceased as Ketan Chavan, a 34-year-old resident of Pimpri. The car was heading towards Pune at the time of the accident.
Details of the accident
Assistant Inspector Akash Pawar, the in-charge of Kamshet police station, stated that the accident occurred around 1:30 a.m. "The car driver might have lost control of the wheel, and the vehicle crashed into the median before hitting the railings of the flyover. The car immediately caught fire. Chavan could not escape," he said.
Pawar added that the fire engulfed the entire car within seconds. Upon receiving information, a police team and the Vadgaon fire brigade personnel rushed to the spot.
Firefighting efforts
Leading fireman Tahir Momin of the Vadgaon fire brigade reported that his team extinguished the fire within 15 minutes. "We found the driver's charred body inside the car," Momin said.
Traffic disruption
Assistant Police Inspector Pawar noted that the accident caused traffic congestion on the Mumbai-Pune highway. Traffic movement resumed after the fire was doused.
"We traced the deceased driver's identity using the car's registration number. Chavan's family members identified him. We will record their statements after a few days," Pawar said.
