A night of revelry turned into a scene of chaos and injury on Shahad Bridge in Kalyan when an allegedly intoxicated car driver ploughed into multiple vehicles, leaving four people wounded. The incident occurred on Wednesday night, sending shockwaves through the local community.
Sequence of a Drunken Disaster
According to the Khadakpada police, the accused has been identified as Rishabh Kariaram. Preliminary investigations reveal that Kariaram was heavily under the influence of alcohol. He was reportedly en route to Shahad railway station to pick up a friend when the tragedy unfolded.
Officials state that due to his severe intoxication, Kariaram lost control of his vehicle. In a critical error, he mistakenly pressed the accelerator instead of the brake, as per Assistant Police Inspector Sheetal Bamne. This caused the car to surge forward uncontrollably.
Impact and Immediate Aftermath
The out-of-control vehicle collided with tremendous force into three scooters and an autorickshaw that were on the bridge. The impact resulted in injuries to four commuters who were on these vehicles. Of the four victims, two are currently undergoing treatment for their injuries, while the other two sustained relatively minor scratches and were attended to.
Enraged by the reckless act, local residents swiftly apprehended the driver at the scene. They handed him over to the police after confronting him. The Khadakpada police have registered a formal case against Rishabh Kariaram in connection with the incident.
Legal Proceedings and Ongoing Probe
Following the initial inquiry at the police station, the authorities served a legal notice to the accused. Rishabh Kariaram was later released as the procedural formalities for the night were completed. However, the police have emphasized that their investigation into the matter is still actively ongoing. Further legal action will be determined as the probe progresses and more evidence is consolidated.
The incident on Shahad Bridge has once again highlighted the grave dangers of drunk driving, turning a routine roadway into a site of peril for innocent commuters.
