A 20-year-old student from Delhi University was arrested in Bareilly on Thursday for allegedly assaulting a home guard who was on duty and attempting to snatch his service weapon outside an ATM in the Prem Nagar area, police officials reported.
Incident Details
The accused, identified as Shivay Kumar, is a resident of the MB Inter College area and is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce degree from a college affiliated with Delhi University. His father serves as a branch manager at a private insurance firm.
The altercation began when Shivay got into an argument with a woman over scooter parking outside a bank ATM. Home guard Sitaram intervened and requested Shivay to move the vehicle, which enraged the student. After the woman left the scene, Shivay entered the ATM booth but was unable to withdraw cash. He came out visibly more agitated.
Assault and Attempt to Snatch Weapon
According to police, Shivay then grabbed the home guard by the collar, verbally abused him, physically assaulted him, and attempted to snatch his service firearm. The home guard managed to retain his weapon and called for backup.
An FIR was registered against Shivay under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for assaulting and obstructing a government servant in the discharge of his duty. He was taken into custody, questioned, and later produced before a court, which remanded him to judicial custody, said CO First Ashutosh Shivam.
Video Surfaces
A video from the lockup also surfaced in which Shivay was seen limping and folding his hands before police officers, apologizing for his actions. He stated that he had made a mistake and would not repeat it. The video has gone viral on social media, sparking discussions about student behavior and respect for law enforcement.
Authorities have emphasized that such acts of violence against public servants will not be tolerated and strict action will be taken. The investigation is ongoing, and further legal proceedings are underway.
