Elderly business owner saves ₹9 lakh from cyber fraud

Lucknow: The prompt action of an elderly businessman and the swift response of the Lucknow cyber crime police helped save ₹9 lakh after cyber fraudsters hacked his mobile phone and siphoned off ₹15 lakh from his bank account in a single transaction.

The victim, identified as Dhruv Dhanwani, a resident of Jankipuram Extension in Lucknow, approached the cyber crime police station immediately after discovering that ₹15 lakh had been illegally transferred from his Kotak Mahindra Bank account on June 19.

According to police, unidentified cyber criminals gained access to the victim’s mobile phone and used it to execute the unauthorized transaction. A case has been registered at the cyber crime police station under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act.

Assistant deputy commissioner of police (cyber crime) Kiran Yadav said the victim’s prompt reporting of the fraud played a crucial role in limiting the losses. “The complainant approached us immediately after learning about the fraudulent transaction. Our teams acted without delay and coordinated with the concerned bank and the national cyber fraud portal. As a result, ₹9 lakh was frozen in the fraudster’s account before it could be withdrawn,” Yadav said. She added that while the accused managed to withdraw around ₹6 lakh before the freeze request could take effect, the timely intervention not only helped save a substantial portion of the money but also generated valuable leads.

“The quick action enabled us to trace the fraudster’s trail. The suspect has been identified and efforts are underway to arrest him soon,” the ADCP said.

The victim expressed gratitude to the Cyber Crime Police Station for its swift response, saying the prompt action had given him hope of recovering the stolen money.
