Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has assured that the state government will seek the death penalty and a fast-track trial for the accused in the horrific rape and murder of a minor girl in Pune. The incident, which has sparked widespread outrage, occurred in the outskirts of the city earlier this week.
CM's Firm Stance on Justice
Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Fadnavis emphasized that the government would leave no stone unturned to ensure the harshest punishment for the perpetrator. "This is a heinous crime that has shaken the conscience of the society. We will push for a fast-track trial and demand the death penalty for the accused," he stated.
Details of the Case
The victim, a 7-year-old girl, was abducted while playing near her home in a slum area. Her body was later found in a nearby field with signs of sexual assault and strangulation. The accused, a 25-year-old man, has been arrested and charged under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
Government's Action Plan
The state government has announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the victim's family. Additionally, a special investigation team (SIT) has been formed to ensure a swift probe. Fadnavis also urged the judiciary to expedite the trial, stating that the case would be treated as a priority.
Public Outrage and Protests
The incident has triggered protests across Pune, with residents demanding strict action. Political leaders from various parties have also condemned the crime and called for capital punishment for the accused. The state government has assured enhanced security measures in vulnerable areas to prevent such incidents in the future.
Legal Experts Weigh In
Legal experts have noted that the case qualifies for the death penalty under the "rarest of rare" doctrine, given the brutality of the crime. However, they caution that the trial must be fair and adhere to due process. The fast-track court is expected to begin proceedings within a week.
The CM's assurance has brought a glimmer of hope to the grieving family, who have been demanding justice. "We want the accused to be hanged. No punishment is enough for what he did to our daughter," said the victim's father.
