A horrific incident has come to light from Deulgaon Raje village in Daund taluka, approximately 100 kilometers from Pune, where a nine-year-old girl was brutally murdered by her father using a chainsaw. The motive behind the gruesome act was a playful alteration of school ranks between the girl and her elder brother.
The Incident
On Saturday, the elder brother teased his sister about her academic performance. The girl, who had secured second place in Standard III, changed her rank to first on the marksheet and downgraded her brother's rank from first to second. When their father, Shantaram Chavan (33), a daily wage worker, discovered this, he became enraged.
The Murder
On Sunday evening, Chavan used a chainsaw cutter to slit his daughter's throat, killing her instantly. He then wrapped her body in a sari and set their house on fire in an attempt to destroy evidence. Later, he pretended that the house had caught fire accidentally and that his daughter was trapped inside.
Police Investigation
Inspector Gopal Pawar of the Daund police stated that they received information about the murder and the attempted cover-up. The police recovered the half-burnt body of the girl from the house and sent it to Sassoon General Hospital for a DNA test. Both Shantaram Chavan and a woman who helped him conceal the crime have been arrested under sections 103 (murder) and 238 (causing disappearance of evidence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Ongoing Probe
The police are continuing their investigations. Inspector Pawar confirmed that the accused initially tried to mislead authorities by claiming a house fire, but the truth emerged during the inquiry. The incident has shocked the local community and raised questions about parental anger and domestic violence.
