A massive fire broke out at a three-storey commercial building in Lucknow's Aliganj area early on 22 June 2026, with several people feared trapped inside. A few casualties are suspected, a senior health department official said.

Fire Erupts in Aliganj Commercial Complex

The fire started around 9:30 AM on Monday at a commercial building housing multiple shops and offices. Thick smoke billowed from the structure as fire tenders rushed to the spot. Witnesses reported hearing explosions from within the building, possibly from gas cylinders or electrical short circuits.

According to the Lucknow Fire Department, at least eight fire engines were deployed to control the blaze. Rescue operations are underway, with teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) also assisting. Authorities have cordoned off the area to facilitate the rescue effort.

Many Feared Trapped, Casualties Suspected

Senior health department official Dr. S.K. Mishra told reporters, "We have received reports that several people are trapped inside the building. A few casualties are suspected, but we cannot confirm the exact number until the rescue operation is complete." He added that ambulances and medical teams have been stationed nearby to provide immediate assistance.

Local residents reported that the building was occupied at the time of the fire, with employees and customers inside. Panic spread as onlookers gathered, and some attempted to help before emergency services arrived.

Rescue and Relief Operations

Firefighters are using ladders and cutting equipment to reach trapped individuals. As of 11:30 AM, at least 15 people had been rescued and taken to nearby hospitals, according to Lucknow District Magistrate Abhishek Prakash. He stated, "We are doing everything possible to rescue those trapped. The fire is largely under control, but cooling operations are ongoing."

The building, located in a busy commercial hub, suffered extensive damage. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined, and an investigation has been ordered.

Government Response

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed grief over the incident and directed officials to ensure swift rescue and medical aid. He announced an ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh to the families of those who lost their lives and Rs 50,000 to the injured.

The state government has also formed a committee to probe the incident and recommend measures to prevent such tragedies in the future. Building owners and tenants are being questioned.
