Trichy: Trichy city police on Sunday arrested four men from Maharashtra for allegedly robbing 1 kilogram of gold bars from a gold trader's residence near Rockfort in the city last week. One more accused remains at large.
Details of the Arrest
Police identified the arrested individuals as Nitin Shendage, 18, Piyush Jadhav, 24, Praveen Nalavade, 37, and Amol Jadhav, 43, all natives of Sangli in Maharashtra. According to police, the gang targeted the house of T Uday, 36, who runs a gold certification and hallmarking business on Periya Chetti Street. Uday also tested, melted, and remade gold jewellery for resale, with the workshop operating on the ground floor of his residence.
Inside Job: Employee's Role
Investigators revealed that Nitin worked at the workshop and had informed the gang about the gold bars stored in the house. On April 25, four men allegedly barged into Uday's house, assaulted and tied up both Uday and Nitin, before escaping with 1 kilogram of gold bars. Police said the gang traveled to Trichy by car, with Amol allegedly dropping the accused near the Samayapuram toll plaza and waiting for them before fleeing with the stolen gold.
Investigation and Confession
Based on CCTV footage and investigation, police suspected Nitin's role after finding contradictions in his statements. During interrogation, he allegedly confessed to plotting the robbery with the others. Police said Piyush and Praveen also helped the gang melt the stolen gold in Andhra Pradesh and arranged money for the operation. Fort police have registered a case and launched efforts to nab the absconding accused. The stolen gold is yet to be recovered.
