A domestic dispute in Hazaribag has taken an unusual turn as a seven-month pregnant woman has claimed her German Shepherd dog attempted to protect her when her husband allegedly assaulted her over a baby shower discussion.
Conflicting Allegations Emerge
The incident unfolded in Okni Mohalla when Rohit Kumar Jain visited his wife Rupa at her parental home seeking reconciliation. According to Rohit's version filed in an FIR on Monday, his wife released their dog into his room the next day, resulting in multiple deep wounds on his body.
However, the pregnant woman presented a completely different account. Rupa Jain, who is seven months pregnant, was admitted to Sheikh Bhikhari Medical College and Hospital on Tuesday, where she submitted a written complaint alleging her husband had beaten her over a petty issue.
Dog's Protective Intervention
Reacting to her husband's allegations, Rupa described their German Shepherd named Cherry as friendly and well-acquainted with everyone in the family, including her husband. "Whatever story he came up with is baseless. Cherry tried to save me from Rohit, who was beating me up, and he got scratched in the process," she claimed.
Rupa provided detailed context about the incident, explaining that Rohit had come to meet her elder sister and stayed at her parents' house on Friday night. "The next morning, we were sitting on the terrace and everything was normal. We were discussing the baby shower, and I suggested keeping the event simple. That made him angry, and he slapped me several times before my mother intervened," she stated.
Cherry came there too, but instead of attacking Rohit, the dog was actually trying to protect me," Rupa added, challenging her husband's narrative.
Police Investigation Underway
Lohsinghna police station in-charge Nishant Kerketta confirmed to TOI that the matter appears to be a domestic dispute. "The couple does not share a good relationship, and an argument led to the incident. We examined the marks on Rohit's body — they are scratches, not bite marks," Kerketta revealed.
The police official emphasized that further investigation is underway and no FIR has been lodged based on Rupa's complaint yet. The authorities are treating this as a serious domestic dispute case that requires careful examination of all evidence and statements from both parties.
Rupa further strengthened her case by showing a picture of her husband playing with the dog, claiming that Rohit had often served her food whenever he visited her parents' house, indicating the dog's familiarity with him.
