In a brazen daylight robbery, a retired woman police officer was targeted by bike-borne assailants in Kanpur on Thursday. The miscreants snatched her gold chain, valued at approximately Rs 1.5 lakh, and fled the scene.
CCTV Captures Brazen Afternoon Snatching
The incident occurred around noon in the Awas Vikas Keshavpuram colony, located in the Rawatpur area. The entire sequence was recorded by a CCTV camera installed outside a neighbouring house, providing crucial evidence to the police. The victim, Manju Lata Dubey, a retired Sub-Inspector (SI) who previously served with the CBCID, had stepped out of her home to offer water for worship at the nearby Gayatri Park.
Modus Operandi of the Accused
According to the complaint lodged by Dubey, two youths on a motorcycle approached her. The rider was wearing a helmet, while the pillion rider had covered his mouth and face with a cloth. The pillion rider initially pretended to ask for directions, a common tactic to distract victims. In a sudden move, he grabbed the gold chain from her neck.
When Manju Lata Dubey attempted to resist the snatching, the assailant pushed her to the ground. He even tried to break her bangles before both accused sped away on their motorcycle. The retired officer's husband is currently posted as a Deputy Jailer in Mirzapur.
Police Launch Intensive Search Operation
Following the incident, the Kanpur Police swung into action. A formal complaint was filed, and two dedicated police teams have been deployed to identify and arrest the accused. Additional Commissioner of Police (West) Kapil Dev Singh stated that the miscreants would be apprehended at the earliest.
As part of the investigation, police launched a search operation in the area and surrounding localities. Later on Thursday evening, checkpoints were set up at several key locations to scrutinize two-wheeler riders, aiming to intercept the fleeing criminals.
This shocking crime in a residential colony has raised concerns about safety in broad daylight, especially as it targeted a former member of the police force herself. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities heavily reliant on the CCTV footage to track down the motorcycle and its riders.
