A tragic incident of celebratory gunfire at a wedding ceremony in Bihar's Rohtas district has claimed the life of a government schoolteacher. The event occurred late on Sunday night in Thanuwa village, under the jurisdiction of the Shiv Sagar police station.
Victim Identified as Teacher from Buxar
The deceased has been identified as Nandan Kumar Singh, aged 50. A resident of Chilhar village in the Itathi police station area, Singh was a government schoolteacher posted in Buxar district. He had traveled to Thanuwa village to attend the wedding of his maternal cousin, a joyous occasion that turned fatal.
Bullet Strikes During 'Jaimala' Ceremony
According to local accounts, the tragedy unfolded during the pivotal 'jaimala' ritual of the wedding. A bullet fired ostensibly in celebration struck Nandan Kumar Singh directly in the chest. The impact was so severe that he succumbed to his injuries on the spot, sending shockwaves through the gathered guests and the local community.
Police Action and Investigation
Acting on the formal statement of Chandan Kumar Singh, the victim's younger brother who was also an eyewitness, the police swiftly registered a First Information Report (FIR). The complaint names six individuals from Thanuwa village as accused. Authorities have confirmed that three of these accused have already been taken into custody.
In a significant development, Sasaram Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Dilip Kumar revealed that the pistol used in the firing has been recovered by the police. Investigators are also meticulously examining available video footage from the event to identify and apprehend the remaining accused. It was noted that two of the six named individuals have prior criminal records.
The seriousness with which the police are treating the case was underscored by the visit of Superintendent of Police (SP) Raushan Kumar to the incident site. The initial probe was led by Shiv Sagar Station House Officer (SHO) Ritesh Kumar Singh, who immediately reached the location to begin investigations.
This incident has once again brought the dangerous and illegal practice of celebratory firing at weddings into sharp focus, highlighting its deadly consequences and the urgent need for stricter enforcement of laws against it.
