Tensions resurfaced in Manipur early in the new year when security personnel discovered a live grenade outside a major Border Security Force (BSF) camp in Thoubal district. The incident has triggered a high-alert situation and a full-scale investigation.
Discovery Near BSF Camp Gate
On the morning of Friday, January 2, a suspicious object was spotted just outside the boundary fencing near the main gate of the Industrial Training Institute (ITI) in Lilong. The site is a sensitive location as it houses personnel from two companies of the BSF. Sources indicate the grenade was first noticed around 7:30 AM.
Security Response and Defusal Operation
Following the discovery, security protocols were immediately activated. Bomb disposal experts were rushed to the scene to neutralize the threat. The explosive device was successfully and safely defused by approximately 10:30 AM, averting a potential tragedy. Preliminary investigations by security agencies suggest unidentified miscreants may have hurled the grenade with the aim of threatening the lives or property of the BSF personnel stationed within the campus.
Case Registered and Probe Intensifies
In response, the Lilong police station has taken swift legal action. Authorities have registered a suo motu case under Section 4 of the Explosive Substances Act and Section 3(5) of the new Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). A dedicated investigation is now underway to trace the origin of the grenade and identify the individuals or groups responsible for this security breach. Security has been significantly tightened in and around the entire Lilong area as a precautionary measure.
