Gurgaon Cop Assaulted, Held Hostage by Locals

Gurgaon: An exemptee head constable (EHC) was allegedly assaulted and held hostage by locals in Nuh's Beri village after he identified a murder accused. The accused managed to escape during the incident, police said. A case was registered against two individuals, one of whom was arrested.

Incident Details

Taoru DSP Abhimanyu Lohan stated, “A case has been registered against the main accused and an unknown person under sections related to obstructing a public servant, assault, freeing a person from police custody, sheltering a wanted criminal and wrongful confinement. Police are conducting raids.”

The incident occurred on Thursday when EHC Bharatpal, posted with the crime branch in Nuh, received information that Javed, a resident of Kherla and wanted in a murder case registered at Punhana Sadar police station, was hiding at a relative's house in Beri village.

Bharatpal informed his senior officers and reached the village along with an informer to verify the information. He kept the house under surveillance and waited for the accused to appear. According to his complaint, a person came out of the house after some time and was identified as the murder accused. Bharatpal then entered the premises and caught hold of Javed.

Assault and Rescue

However, several locals gathered at the spot. The complaint stated that around 15-20 men and women surrounded the policeman and assaulted him despite him informing them that he was a police officer. The group allegedly freed Javed from the policeman's custody and helped him flee. The complaint further alleged that the accused persons then forcibly took Bharatpal in a vehicle to another house and locked him inside a room.

The policeman managed to inform senior officers earlier, an officer said. After receiving the information, a team from Mohammadpur Ahir police station reached the spot and rescued him. During the operation, police arrested one of the accused, identified as Umair, a resident of the village. Other accused persons fled after learning about the police arrival, police said.
