Gurgaon Police Forms 5 Law-and-Order Companies

Gurgaon: In a move to bolster operational readiness for major protests, crowd management, communal unrest, VIP security, and other critical incidents, the police have formed five dedicated law-and-order companies, comprising more than 500 personnel across the city.

Company Composition and Leadership

Each company consists of 107 police personnel and is led by an assistant commissioner of police as the company commander. An inspector-rank officer serves as the assistant commander, overseeing operational coordination.

Zonal Deployment

Four of the companies were established on a zonal basis, with one unit assigned to each of the East, West, South, and Manesar zones. The fifth company operates under the deputy commissioner of police (headquarters) and can be deployed anywhere in the district as needed.

Police spokesperson Sandeep Kumar stated, "These units can be mobilised immediately whenever required for law-and-order duties, crowd management, VIP security arrangements, disaster response, and other special situations."

Background and Recent Incident

The formation comes amid increasing demands on the police force during large gatherings and protests. On April 9, over 1,000 contractual workers gathered outside factories in IMT Manesar despite prohibitory orders, protesting minimum wage demands. The protest turned violent, with stone pelting, damage to public and private property, and vandalism of police vehicles, including the Manesar SHO's official vehicle and a police motorcycle that was set ablaze. Glass panes at industrial units were damaged, and attempts were made to set furniture on fire.

Police used a lathi charge to disperse the crowd. Several workers and six to seven police personnel sustained minor injuries. Two FIRs, including one for attempt to murder, were registered at IMT Manesar police station, and around 70 people were arrested.

Future Plans

Officials noted that the new companies will operate in an organised manner, strengthening the force's ability to maintain public order and respond effectively to similar situations. Plans are underway to establish five additional companies in the coming months.
