A horrific incident in Gurgaon has sent shockwaves across the region, where a 25-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped inside a vehicle she believed was an ambulance. The brutal attack occurred on the night of December 30, amid dense fog, leaving the victim with grievous injuries.
The Night of the Attack
According to the victim's family, the woman was returning home late at night when she sought a lift due to the poor visibility. She reportedly saw an Eeco van approaching and, trusting it because it appeared to be an ambulance, asked for help. The family has alleged that the crime of rape and brutal assault took place inside this very vehicle. Around 3 am near Raja Chowk in SGM Nagar, the two accused men pushed the severely injured woman out of the moving van.
Investigation and Allegations Against Ambulance Workers
The Gurgaon police's crime branch acted swiftly, detaining two suspects and seizing the Eeco van. In a shocking claim, the victim's family has stated that both men taken into custody are ambulance workers attached to the fleet of a private hospital chain with establishments in Noida and Faridabad. However, the police have not officially confirmed if the seized van was indeed used as an operational ambulance.
The investigation now hinges on a Test Identification Parade (TIP), which can only be conducted once the survivor is medically fit to participate. A senior police officer assured that the crime branch team made swift arrests and will ensure the culprits are punished, but refrained from sharing further details until the TIP is completed.
Fight for Survival and Plea for Help
The survivor is currently battling for her life in a private hospital in Faridabad's NIT area. She was initially taken to a local hospital by her elder sister after the victim managed to contact her. Doctors later referred her to a Delhi hospital, but the family chose the facility in Faridabad.
Her injuries are severe and extensive. Medical sources indicate she has sustained multiple fractures and trauma injuries to her face, eyes, and shoulders. With stitches on her face, she remains under close medical observation and is not in a condition to speak.
The woman's elder sister has made a desperate appeal for financial assistance, revealing that the family has already spent Rs 45,000 on treatment and is struggling with mounting medical expenses. She mentioned that while many have visited and offered assurances, no concrete financial help has materialised yet. The sister also raised concerns about restricted access to the patient, a claim countered by police who stated that doctors advised precautions to prevent infection.
Renu Bhatia, the Chairperson of the Haryana State Women's Commission, visited the survivor on Friday and has assured help, including potentially shifting her to another hospital. The victim, a mother of two children aged four and seven, lives separately from her husband who is based in Delhi. Her children are currently with their maternal grandmother.
An FIR has been registered at the Kotwali police station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including gang rape, criminal intimidation, and acts done by several persons. As the legal process unfolds, the case highlights a grave breach of trust and raises urgent questions about safety and accountability.
