Guwahati Police Sees Major Crime Drop in 2025: Convictions Up, Cases Down
Guwahati Police Reports Major Crime Reduction in 2025

The Guwahati Police Commissionerate has announced a dramatic improvement in law and order for the year 2025, showcasing substantial gains in preventing crime, solving cases, and securing convictions. Key figures reveal a consistent downward trend in criminal incidents alongside a robust increase in the efficiency of the judicial process within the police system.

Steep Decline in Crime Registration and Pendency

Presenting the annual data, Joint Police Commissioner Ankur Jain stated that the total number of cases registered in 2025 fell to 5,786. This marks a significant decrease from 7,412 cases in 2024 and 9,393 cases in 2023. A particularly striking achievement is the reduction in pending cases. The year-end pendency stood at just 2,882 cases, a massive improvement compared to the backlog of 35,396 cases recorded in 2021.

The efficiency in processing cases saw remarkable improvement. The chargesheeting rate, which indicates cases where police file a formal charge sheet in court, soared to 68.34% in 2025. This is a major leap from 42.56% in 2024 and a mere 19.13% in 2023. Most notably, the conviction rate witnessed a transformative jump, rising from just 4% in 2021 to an impressive 28.5% in 2025.

Targeted Success Against Property Crime and Narcotics

A significant area of success was in curbing crimes against property. Such cases dropped to 1,854 in 2025 from 2,804 in 2024 and 3,752 in 2023. Police officials credited this decline to intensified night patrolling and faster response times. A total of 2,118 individuals were arrested for property-related offences during the year.

Vehicle theft saw a sharp reduction, with only 553 cases reported in 2025 compared to 1,118 in 2024. Police arrested 239 people in connection with these thefts, recovered 267 vehicles, and achieved a recovery rate of 48.2%, up from 34.8% the previous year. In mobile theft cases, 203 arrests led to the recovery of 1,159 stolen phones.

The police's crackdown on narcotics was also vigorous. Under the NDPS Act, 406 cases were registered leading to the arrest of 555 people. The seizures were substantial, including 11.919 kg of heroin, 529.301 kg of ganja, 9,865 bottles of psychotropic syrup, and 34,918 tablets. The total estimated value of the confiscated narcotics was about Rs 28.87 crore.

Cyber Crime Recovery and Road Safety Improvements

The Cyber Police Station in Panbazar achieved a notable feat by recovering Rs 6.28 crore lost to online frauds and successfully returning the funds to the victims. A total of 18 cybercrime cases were registered in the commissionerate's jurisdiction in 2025.

On the traffic front, accident cases declined to 1,026 in 2025 from 1,218 in the previous year. In a positive note for New Year's Eve, no accidents were reported on December 31. The total collection from traffic fines during the year amounted to Rs 50.21 crore.

The comprehensive data for 2025 paints a picture of a police force that has enhanced its operational effectiveness across multiple domains, from street-level patrolling to complex cyber fraud investigations, resulting in a safer environment for Guwahati's citizens.
