HC directs IPS officer Sunil Kumar Naik to appear in torture case

Vijayawada: The high court on Friday directed Bihar cadre IPS officer Sunil Kumar Naik to appear before the investigating officer when required in connection with the alleged custodial torture of former MP and current deputy speaker K Raghu Ramakrishna Raju. Naik had approached the high court seeking anticipatory bail in a case registered by Nagarampalem police in Guntur, based on a complaint filed by Raju.

Court Proceedings

The counsel representing Naik requested an adjournment until July 15, citing that senior counsel Kapil Sibal would appear and argue the matter. However, Justice Y Lakshmana Rao stated that July 15 was too far away and declined to grant such an extension. The judge posted the matter for further hearing on July 3. Justice Rao also ordered that Naik must appear before the investigating officer if summoned in the interim period.

Background of the Case

Naik was on deputation to Andhra Pradesh and served as Deputy Inspector General in the Crime Investigation Department when the alleged incident occurred. Raju has made specific allegations against Naik and other CID officials at that time.
