Hotel cashier arrested for misappropriating ₹31,500 in Chennai

Chennai: A 19-year-old employee of a private hotel was arrested on Saturday for allegedly misappropriating funds amounting to ₹31,500 from his workplace in Perambur. The accused, identified as Deepak Kumar, a native of Bihar, was working as a cashier at the hotel and had been staying on the premises.

How the theft came to light

The incident was uncovered by the hotel supervisor, Loganathan, aged 37, who noticed discrepancies in the cash receipts during the months of March and April. While verifying the income and expenditure accounts, Loganathan found that the cash records did not match the actual money received. When he confronted Deepak about the inconsistencies, the latter gave evasive and inconsistent responses, raising suspicion.

Police investigation and arrest

Following a formal complaint lodged by Loganathan, the police launched an investigation. They examined the CCTV footage from the hotel, which revealed that Deepak had been siphoning off small amounts of money over a period of time. The cumulative amount misappropriated totaled ₹31,500. Based on the evidence, the police arrested Deepak Kumar on charges of misappropriation of funds.
