Hyderabad Police Launches 'SHE Netra' Initiative with Special Gadgets to Detect Hidden Cameras
The Hyderabad police have taken a significant step to enhance women's safety and privacy by launching the 'SHE Netra' initiative on Friday. This new wing, operating under the existing SHE Teams, is specifically designed to conduct decoy operations at various public venues, including malls, theaters, and other crowded areas, to combat the threat of hidden surveillance cameras.
Dedicated Teams and Advanced Technology
According to Hyderabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar, the primary goal of SHE Netra is to safeguard the dignity and privacy of women against the increasing menace of hidden cameras. "These specialised teams are dedicated to detecting and neutralising hidden surveillance in public and private spaces such as hotels, malls, hostels, educational institutions, and commercial complexes," he stated.
The initiative is supported by hand-held gadgets that can detect hidden cameras. When directed at a suspicious location, the device emits a light beam that helps identify the presence of a camera lens. So far, seven teams have been formed, each equipped with these camera detection gadgets, and all members have received comprehensive training in using the technology effectively.
Proactive Measures and Past Incidents
Deputy Commissioner of Police (SHE Teams) Lavanya Naik Jadav revealed that while there have been no specific complaints about hidden cameras in public places like malls, the police are acting proactively. "A few months ago, a house owner had installed a hidden camera inside a tube light in a washroom of a rented house," she told TOI, highlighting the need for such measures. The SHE Netra initiative is intended as a deterrent to prevent such privacy breaches from occurring in the future.
Collaboration with Managements
To ensure widespread implementation, the police have instructed managements of public establishments to appoint a customer safety in-charge. This nodal person will coordinate with the SHE Teams and oversee safety protocols. "Managements have also been instructed to procure their own camera detectors and conduct regular internal sweeps. The police department will provide the necessary training for these designated officers," Jadav further explained.
How the Detection Process Works
The operational procedure for SHE Netra involves:
- Visiting public places and identifying apertures in sensitive areas like washrooms and change rooms.
- Holding the camera detector gadget at a 90-degree angle to the suspected spot.
- Directing a light beam into the aperture.
- Observing the light: if it turns pink, it confirms the presence of a camera lens, indicating a hidden surveillance device.
This systematic approach aims to provide real-time detection and immediate action, thereby reinforcing the commitment to women's safety and privacy in Hyderabad.
