On a recent Saturday, Constable Shanti finished her official shift at the Rangampeta police station. She was returning to her home in Kakinada with her two-and-a-half-year-old baby. As her car approached the Samalkota railway station road, she encountered a massive traffic congestion caused by the Sankranti holiday rush.
Shanti immediately noticed an ambulance trapped in the gridlock. Despite being off duty and outside her normal jurisdiction, she did not hesitate. She first handed her child to fellow passengers in the vehicle. Then she pushed through the crowded street to begin managing the chaotic traffic.
