Kanpur GRP Officer Lands in Jail for Demanding Monthly Bribe

In a significant anti-corruption operation, a police officer from Kanpur has been sent to jail. The Anti-Corruption Team presented GRP Anwarganj outpost in-charge Premchand before a court on Tuesday. The court ordered judicial custody for the accused sub-inspector.

Contractor's Complaint Triggers Action

The case unfolded at Anwarganj railway station, which is currently undergoing redevelopment under the Amrit Bharat scheme. Contractor Sandeep, who was installing tiles at the station, filed a formal complaint. He alleged that Premchand was demanding a monthly payment of Rs 5,000 as a convenience fee.

This regular demand for money prompted the contractor to approach the authorities. The complaint detailed how the GRP officer expected this payment every month without fail.

Anti-Corruption Team Sets a Trap

Acting on the contractor's complaint, the Anti-Corruption Team devised a plan to catch the officer red-handed. They prepared a trap and waited for the right moment. The team successfully apprehended Premchand as soon as he accepted the money from the contractor's supervisor.

The swift action ensured concrete evidence against the accused officer. The trap operation proved effective in documenting the bribery attempt.

Legal Proceedings and Departmental Inquiry

Following the arrest, Anti-Corruption police station in-charge Jata Shankar registered an FIR against the outpost in-charge at Kotwali police station. The legal process moved forward with the court appearance and subsequent jail order.

Meanwhile, Etawah GRP CO Uday Pratap Singh confirmed that orders for a departmental inquiry have been issued. This internal investigation will examine the officer's conduct during his posting.

Background of the Accused Officer

Premchand, a native of Mathura, had been serving at the Anwarganj GRP outpost in Kanpur for approximately one year. His tenure at this posting has now ended with serious corruption charges. The case highlights ongoing efforts to combat corruption within public institutions.

The incident serves as a warning to other officials who might consider similar illegal demands. It demonstrates that vigilant citizens and proactive anti-corruption units can work together effectively.
