A Kanpur man was arrested on Monday for allegedly killing his 30-year-old second wife, stuffing her body in a trunk, and dumping it on the Kanpur-Varanasi highway in Kaushambi’s Kokhraj area on April 15. The accused, Harsh Khiyani alias Bittu (37), had married the victim, Moni Verma, in a temple a year ago despite already being married.
Arrests and Investigation
Along with the prime accused, his friend Yash Gupta was also arrested by the Kaushambi police. Gupta allegedly helped Khiyani in dumping the body and destroying the evidence. Following the recovery of the body, senior police officials formed three teams, including the Special Operations Group (SOG), to crack the case. After the autopsy report revealed strangulation as the cause of death, a case under Section 103(1) and 238(a) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) was filed against unknown persons.
Double Life of the Accused
Police said Khiyani led a double life. He was married twice — his first wife lived in Kanpur’s Ratan Lal Nagar and the second in Sharda Nagar. Khiyani confessed that he married Moni Verma in a temple a year ago despite his first marriage. For the past few weeks, Moni had been pressuring him to live with her family. The accused made several futile attempts to pacify her, but she remained adamant, which led to the fatal incident.
