Kanpur Police Crack Down on Temple Silver Crown Theft, Arrest Three Accused
In a significant breakthrough, the Kanpur police have successfully cracked the case involving the theft of silver crowns from the Siddhi Vinayak Ganesh Mandir located at Sutarkhana, Ghanta Ghar. The authorities have arrested three individuals in connection with this crime, including a married couple and a goldsmith who was involved in disposing of the stolen items.
Details of the Arrests and Accused Persons
The arrested individuals have been identified as Majid Ansari and his wife Anjum Parveen, both residents of Kasganj district. Additionally, police apprehended Javed Ahmad, a goldsmith from Mansoor Chowk in the Gangdudwara area of Kasganj. Javed Ahmad had purchased the stolen silver crowns from the couple, subsequently melting them down to create silver biscuits in an attempt to destroy any evidence linking him to the theft.
Timeline and Method of the Temple Theft
The theft occurred on April 12, when seven silver crowns were stolen from the Siddhi Vinayak Ganesh Mandir in broad daylight. According to police reports, the accused couple executed the theft while the on-duty security guard, Omprakash Gupta, was away using the bathroom. This provided them with the opportunity to carry out their plan without immediate detection.
CCTV footage from the temple captured the entire incident. The footage shows the male accused, Majid Ansari, first paying obeisance to the deity before proceeding to remove all seven crowns from the idol. His wife, Anjum Parveen, then concealed the stolen silver crowns, which weighed approximately 600 grams, within her clothing. To avoid suspicion, she kept a child close to her, using the child as cover for the hidden items. After successfully stealing the crowns, the couple fled the scene on a motorcycle, heading towards the Raipurwa area.
Police Investigation and Recovery Efforts
Following the theft, Kanpur police launched an intensive investigation, reviewing CCTV footage and gathering intelligence that led them to the accused couple. Their interrogation revealed the involvement of goldsmith Javed Ahmad, who had purchased the stolen crowns. Police stated that Javed Ahmad melted the crowns to produce silver biscuits, a move intended to obliterate any trace of the original stolen property. Despite this attempt to destroy evidence, authorities were able to track down and arrest all three individuals involved.
