Kallayyajja, a prominent seer from Gadag in Karnataka, has claimed he is receiving death threats amid a controversy over the naming of donated items at his matha. The seer made the revelation on Tuesday, escalating a dispute that has drawn attention to donation practices in religious institutions.
Seer speaks out on threats
Speaking to reporters, Kallayyajja said, 'I am facing death threats from certain individuals who are unhappy with my stance on donation inscriptions.' He did not name the individuals but indicated that the threats stem from a disagreement over whether donors' names should be engraved on items they contribute to the matha.
The seer explained that some donors request their names to be inscribed on donated items, while others prefer anonymity. The issue has become a point of contention, with some groups allegedly pressuring the seer to allow all inscriptions, while others oppose any naming.
Background of the dispute
The controversy erupted after a recent donation drive at the matha, where several high-value items were contributed. According to sources, a faction within the matha's management wanted to honor donors by inscribing their names, but the seer resisted, citing tradition and the risk of creating hierarchies among devotees.
Kallayyajja stated, 'Our matha has always followed the principle of anonymity in donations. I will not compromise on this principle, even if it costs me my life.' He added that he has reported the threats to the local police and sought protection.
Police response and community reaction
Gadag police confirmed that they have received a complaint from the seer and are investigating the matter. 'We have registered a case and are looking into the threats. Security has been increased at the matha,' said a police official on condition of anonymity.
The development has sparked debate in the community, with some devotees supporting the seer's stand on anonymity, while others argue that donors have the right to recognition. Local leaders have called for calm and urged dialogue to resolve the issue.
