The Kerala High Court has issued a stay order on further court proceedings for one month in a high-profile case. This case stems from a serious incident where MLA Uma Thomas sustained severe injuries. The accident occurred at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kaloor, Kochi.
Details of the Incident
On December 29, 2024, around 6:30 PM, Uma Thomas attended the inaugural function of a Guinness World Record attempt. The event featured 12,000 Bharatanatyam dancers. As she stepped onto a makeshift stage, she held onto a retractable ribbon and queue stands for support. Unfortunately, she lost her balance and fell. Her head hit a concrete slab on the ground, causing severe injuries.
Police Investigation and Charges
The Palarivattom police conducted a thorough probe into the alleged incident. They filed a final report before the court. Initially, police registered the case under bailable offences. Later, they amended it to include non-bailable charges. The case is currently pending before the judicial first-class magistrate court–IX in Ernakulam.
High Court Intervention
Justice C S Dias issued the stay order in response to a petition. P S Janeesh, the owner of Oscar Event Management from Thrissur, filed this petition. His company had organized the programme for Mridanga Vision, a group from Wayanad. Janeesh is the third accused in the case.
He has challenged the invocation of BNS Section 110 in the High Court. This section deals with the offence of attempt to commit culpable homicide. The court has adjourned the petition to February 2 for further hearing.
Implications of the Stay
The one-month stay halts all legal proceedings temporarily. This gives time for the High Court to review the petition's merits. The case has drawn significant attention due to the involvement of a public figure and the serious nature of the charges.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely. The outcome could set important precedents for event safety and legal accountability in similar incidents.
