Alarmed by rampant traffic violations, the Kerala State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has stepped in, directing the Kochi District Collector to convene an urgent high-level meeting. The move aims to strictly curb dangerous driving practices, particularly involving new-generation motorcycles, in the city.
Suo Motu Case Based on Media Reports
The commission initiated the action on its own, based on disturbing media reports. These reports highlighted a trend of riders speeding on pavements without helmets, carrying multiple passengers, and driving triples on modified bikes. The SHRC emphasized that such reckless behavior poses a severe threat to public safety and ordered immediate corrective measures.
High-Powered Meeting and AI Camera Push
SHRC Chairperson Alexander Thomas specified that the joint officer-level meeting must include key officials to find effective solutions. The required attendees are the Road Safety Commissioner, the District Police Chief (City), the Traffic Assistant Commissioner, the RTO, the Joint RTO, and the Kochi Corporation Secretary.
A major focus of the directive is the assessment and deployment of technology. The commission has ordered a thorough check of the number and functionality of existing AI cameras in Kochi. "It should be examined whether more cameras are needed. It should also be decided who should install them," stated Chairperson Thomas. He mandated that a detailed report on these findings be submitted to the commission within a strict deadline of three weeks.
Personal Appearance Mandated for Follow-Up
To ensure accountability, the SHRC has summoned several officials to appear in person at its next sitting. The RTO, Joint RTO, Traffic ACP, a representative from the Road Safety Commissionerate, and the Municipal Secretary must attend. This hearing is scheduled for 10 am on January 22 at the PWD Rest House in Pathadipalam.
This decisive intervention by the rights body signals a crackdown on the growing menace of rash and illegal driving in Kochi. By pushing for a coordinated response and leveraging AI-based surveillance, the authorities aim to restore order and safety on the city's roads.
