Rising Cyber Fraud in Tumakuru
Cybercriminals in Karnataka's Tumakuru district are targeting people across all educational and social strata, with a notable surge in online fraud cases. According to local police, even highly educated individuals have fallen prey to sophisticated scams, highlighting that no one is immune to digital threats. The district has witnessed a steady increase in complaints, with cyber frauds ranging from phishing and online shopping scams to investment frauds and identity theft.
Police Action Against Obscene Content
Apart from financial frauds, authorities are also registering cases against individuals who share obscene videos and images involving children on social media platforms. The Tumakuru police have intensified monitoring and are taking stringent action under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Information Technology Act. Officials urge citizens to report such content immediately and avoid sharing or forwarding any suspicious material.
Modus Operandi of Cybercriminals
Cybercriminals employ varied tactics, including fake job offers, lottery scams, and impersonation of government officials. Many victims are lured through social media and messaging apps. In one recent case, a well-educated professional lost over ₹2 lakh after clicking a malicious link promising a high-return investment. Police emphasize that awareness and caution are the best defenses against such threats.
Preventive Measures and Community Outreach
To combat the rise in cybercrime, Tumakuru police have launched awareness campaigns in schools, colleges, and corporate offices. They advise people to enable two-factor authentication, avoid sharing OTPs or personal details, and verify the authenticity of any unsolicited communication. The district cyber cell helpline (1930) is available for reporting cyber frauds. According to a police officer, "Education alone is not enough; continuous digital hygiene and skepticism towards unknown contacts are crucial."
Legal Framework and Penalties
Offenders face strict penalties under the IT Act and Indian Penal Code. For sharing child sexual abuse material, imprisonment can extend up to seven years with fines. Police are also tracking down cybercriminals using advanced forensic tools and collaborating with national agencies. The public is encouraged to file complaints at the nearest cyber police station or via the national cybercrime reporting portal.
