KGMU Doctor Faces Serious Charges in Lucknow Case
The Chowk police in Lucknow took a significant step on Friday by filing a comprehensive chargesheet against former junior resident of King George's Medical University (KGMU), Rameezuddin, along with his father Salimuddin (70), mother Khateja (67), and associate Shariq Khan. This legal action follows disturbing allegations that have shocked the medical community and law enforcement agencies.
Detailed Charges Against the Accused
Rameezuddin faces severe charges including rape, forced abortion, and coercion for religious conversion under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). His parents and Shariq Khan have been charged with harboring the accused and actively aiding in coercion and religious conversion activities. The 31-year-old doctor, also known as Rameez and originally from Pilibhit, was apprehended near City Station in Lucknow on January 9 after an extensive investigation.
Origins of the Case and Initial Complaint
According to DCP (West Zone) Vishwajeet Srivastava, the case originated when a junior woman doctor at KGMU filed a detailed written complaint at Chowk police station. She accused her senior colleague of sexually exploiting her over an extended period based on false promises of marriage. The survivor provided specific allegations stating the accused repeatedly raped her, forced her to undergo an abortion procedure, and systematically coerced her into religious conversion against her will.
Legal Framework and Additional Discoveries
Based on this compelling complaint, police registered a First Information Report (FIR) under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita along with Sections 3 and 5 of the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Religious Conversion Act, 2021. During their thorough investigation, authorities uncovered similar disturbing allegations involving another woman medical student from Agra. This second survivor accused the same doctor of sexual assault, forced religious conversion, and coercion that allegedly led to a miscarriage.
Expanded Scope and Family Involvement
Both survivors provided formal statements before a magistrate, detailing not only the doctor's actions but also implicating his family members in the coercive activities. Investigators determined that Rameezuddin's parents and associate played active roles in pressuring the victims to convert religions and facilitating the abortion procedures. This revelation led police to formally name additional accused in the case, expanding the scope of legal proceedings.
Arrests and Judicial Proceedings
The parents, Salimuddin and Khateja, were arrested on January 5 from a rented accommodation in Thakurganj area of Lucknow. Following their apprehension, they were remanded to judicial custody as the investigation continued to unfold. Police officials emphasized that the parents played a crucial role in influencing and coercing the victims, making their involvement a central aspect of the case.
Broader Implications and Ongoing Investigation
This case highlights serious concerns about professional misconduct, sexual exploitation, and forced religious conversion within educational institutions. The chargesheet represents a critical milestone in ensuring accountability for alleged crimes that violated both personal autonomy and religious freedom. As legal proceedings advance, authorities continue to examine all aspects of these disturbing allegations while supporting the survivors through the judicial process.
