Kochi: An elderly motorcyclist sustained severe head injuries after an autorickshaw struck his bike handle, causing him to lose control of the vehicle and overturn, before a tipper truck coming from behind ran over him.
The mishap happened at 8:30 a.m. at Nettoor near Kundannoor flyover.
Venugopal T P, 65, a resident of Thindiyil House, Kumbalam, suffered serious head and spinal injuries. According to Panangad police, a rashly driven autorickshaw attempted to overtake the bike from the left side and hit the handle of the bike. "The bike rider lost control and fell towards the right-side track. A speeding tipper truck was coming from behind and ran over him. He was rushed to a nearby hospital," police said.
Venugopal's condition is stated to be out of danger as of Saturday evening. "He was wearing a helmet, and this solely saved his life," a hospital spokesperson said.
Based on a complaint filed by the victim's relatives, Panangad police lodged a case, in which the unidentified autorickshaw driver is the first accused and the tipper truck driver is the second accused. "We're examining the CCTV visuals, and an attempt is on to identify and nab the auto driver. A case under sections 281 and 125 (B) of BNS has been lodged," a police officer said.
