In a significant breakthrough, the Kolkata Police have successfully solved the brutal daylight murder of a fruit vendor in the busy Rajabazar area within just six days. The accused, identified as Muslim Ansari, was arrested from Jharkhand, with police citing an extra-marital affair as the motive behind the shocking crime.
Swift Police Action Cracks the Case
Investigators from Amherst Street Police Station, aided by the Detective Department, tracked down and apprehended the prime suspect, Muslim Ansari, on December 28. The arrest took place at the Birni Police Station compound in Giridih, Jharkhand. During the operation, the police also recovered the scooty believed to have been used by the assailant to flee the crime scene. A knife, suspected to be the murder weapon, had been recovered earlier from the location of the attack on APC Road.
The Fatal Attack and the Motive
The incident dates back to December 22, around 9 am, when the 41-year-old fruit vendor, Mehboob Alam, was attacked at his stall at the bustling Rajabazar crossing. According to eyewitness accounts and police reports, the suspect, also known as Muslim, approached Alam and engaged in a heated argument before launching a vicious knife attack. The sudden violence left passersby stunned and created chaos at the spot.
Alam was rushed to the Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. The brazen nature of the attack in a crowded area sent waves of shock and fear through the local community.
Revealing the motive, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime & Traffic) Rupesh Kumar stated, "An extra-marital affair of the deceased Mehboob Alam with the wife of the assailant Md Muslim led to the murder." This revelation provided the crucial lead that helped police connect the dots and zero in on the suspect.
Legal Proceedings and Next Steps
The arrested accused, Muslim Ansari, is now set to be presented before the Court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate in Giridih. The Kolkata Police will seek a transit remand to bring him back to the city by Monday for further legal proceedings. The swift crackdown by the police force has brought a measure of relief to the anxious residents of the area, demonstrating effective investigative capabilities in a high-profile case.
The recovery of both the suspected murder weapon and the vehicle used in the crime adds substantial weight to the evidence gathered by the investigators. The case highlights the severe consequences of personal disputes spilling over into public violence, disrupting the peace and safety of a prominent Kolkata locality.
