Kolkata Man Arrested for Puppy Killing, Faces 5-Year Jail

Police in Kolkata have arrested a young man for the brutal killing of a one-month-old puppy. The incident occurred in the Narayanpur Hothat Colony area of Rajarhat on Wednesday.

Violent Attack on Helpless Puppy

Md Riyaz, aged 28, allegedly beat the small puppy to death using a rod. Residents reported that the puppy was simply roaming near his feet when the attack happened. The youth had previously objected to people feeding stray dogs in the colony.

Community Outrage Leads to Arrest

Local residents immediately reacted with shock and anger. A neighbor filed an official complaint with the Bidhannagar City Police. Officers acted swiftly and arrested Riyaz on Thursday, just one day after the violent incident.

The puppy's body has been sent for post-mortem examination. This medical procedure will provide crucial evidence for the ongoing investigation.

Suspect Shows Little Remorse

Police officers described the arrested youth as largely unapologetic about his actions. "He admitted he dislikes dogs," said a Bidhannagar City Police officer. "But he claimed he didn't intend to kill the animal."

Residents told police there were four puppies in the colony that people regularly fed. The community had developed affection for these animals over time.

Serious Legal Consequences Possible

If proven guilty in court, Riyaz could face severe punishment. Police confirmed he might receive a jail sentence of up to five years for this act of animal cruelty.

The case highlights growing concerns about animal welfare in urban areas. It also demonstrates how quickly communities will report such incidents to authorities.
