Former Karnataka Chief Minister and Union Minister H D Kumaraswamy has demanded the establishment of a police outpost at Muthathi, following a series of drowning incidents in the region. Expressing shock over the tragedies, Kumaraswamy urged authorities to install caution boards near the river and suggested barbed wire fencing to prevent people from entering the water.
Details of the demand
In a statement issued on June 26, 2026, Kumaraswamy emphasized the need for immediate safety measures at Muthathi, a popular riverside spot. He noted that the lack of proper oversight had contributed to multiple drownings. The police outpost, he argued, would ensure constant surveillance and rapid response to emergencies.
Proposed safety measures
Kumaraswamy recommended the installation of clear warning signs in multiple languages, along with sturdy barbed wire fencing along dangerous sections of the riverbank. He also called for regular patrolling by local authorities to discourage risky behavior. According to sources, at least five drowning incidents have been reported in the area over the past year.
"The repeated loss of lives at Muthathi is heartbreaking. We cannot allow such tragedies to continue. A police outpost and proper fencing are essential to protect visitors," Kumaraswamy said.
Government response
The Karnataka government has yet to officially respond to the demand. However, local officials have acknowledged the issue and promised to review the feasibility of the proposals. Meanwhile, residents and frequent visitors have expressed support for Kumaraswamy's suggestions, urging swift action.
