A tragic incident occurred in Mohali's Aerocity on Friday, where a 40-year-old labourer died after reportedly suffering an electric shock near a streetlight in C-Block. The deceased, believed to be a native of Bihar, worked as a labourer. His body has been placed in the civil hospital mortuary for 72 hours to allow identification by family or acquaintances, police said. Legal proceedings will commence after recording statements from relatives.
Residents Protest Negligence
Following the incident, area councillor Harvinder Singh, along with residents, staged a protest at the site. They raised slogans against the administration and departments responsible for maintaining streetlights and electrical connections. Singh stated that the death resulted from gross negligence by authorities and demanded an impartial inquiry.
Faulty Electrical Infrastructure
Residents highlighted that exposed wires and faulty fittings near several streetlights posed a constant threat. Councillor Singh claimed he had repeatedly informed officials about the poor condition of streetlights in Aerocity, but no action was taken. He lamented that timely action could have saved a precious life.
Demand for Safety Audit
The incident has raised concerns about electrical infrastructure in public spaces. Residents urged the administration to conduct a comprehensive safety audit of streetlights, electricity poles, and connections across Aerocity. They also called for strict action against negligent officials or employees.
