Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: The use of laser and high-intensity beam lights within a 15-kilometer radius of the airport and within the jurisdiction of the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar city police commissionerate has been prohibited for an additional 60 days, extending the restriction until July 5. The order was issued by Commissioner of Police (CP) Pravin Pawar under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, citing potential threats to aircraft movement. The prohibition came into effect on Thursday.
Reasons for the Prohibitory Order
The decision follows concerns raised by the Airports Authority of India regarding the frequent use of laser and beam lights during weddings, social gatherings, religious functions, and festivals at farmhouses, marriage halls, and open venues near the airport. After reviewing these concerns, CP Pawar determined that preventive action was necessary to avoid any untoward incident that could compromise aviation safety.
Scope of the Ban
Invoking his powers as a special executive magistrate under Section 163 of the BNSS, Pawar prohibited any individual, event organizer, or establishment from using laser or beam lights aimed toward the sky within a 15-kilometer radius of the airport as well as within the limits of the city police commissionerate. The order applies to all social, cultural, and religious events where decorative or entertainment lighting systems are commonly used.
Safety Concerns
CP Pawar emphasized that powerful laser and beam lights could potentially trigger serious aviation accidents. “Laser and beam lights directed into the sky can distract pilots, endangering passengers' safety,” he stated in the order. The distraction caused by such lights can interfere with critical flight operations, especially during takeoff and landing phases.
Penalties for Violation
Any violation of the prohibitory order will invite penal action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The commissionerate has directed all deputy commissioners, assistant commissioners, and police station in-charges to ensure strict implementation of the order. Authorities have been instructed to publicize the restriction widely through police stations, government offices, public notice boards, markets, bus stands, railway stations, and other public places to ensure that organizers and residents are aware of the prohibition.
