Lucknow: Lucknow University (LU) has established two new gold medals that will be awarded for the first time during its convocation ceremony scheduled for July 31. The first medal is named after Professor S.J.H. Abidi, a distinguished literary scholar and former head of the Department of English and Modern European Languages at LU. According to Professor R.P. Singh, the current head of the department, Professor Abidi was not only an academic but also a celebrated author and poet. His notable works include books on Indian Writing in English and a poetry collection titled Myth, Memory and Serenade.
This gold medal will be presented to the student who achieves the highest marks in the Master of Arts (English) program at Canning College, LU. In the event of a tie, the medal will be awarded to the student with higher marks in the final semester. The second award, the Shri Chandramani Singh Gold Medal, will be given annually to the student securing the highest marks in the postgraduate Jyotir Vigyan (Astrology) examination. Previously, the department did not have any university-sponsored or instituted gold medal. LU spokesperson Mukul Srivastava stated that this medal was established by Deepak Singh in memory of his late father, Shri Chandramani Singh.
