A tragic incident in Lucknow has resulted in the death of a young BA first-year student, who ended her life after allegedly being raped by a cousin who lived with her family. The victim succumbed on Monday while undergoing treatment at the city's Balrampur Hospital.
A Family's Tragedy Unfolds
The deceased, originally from Hardoi district, lived with her family in Lucknow, where her father works as a vegetable vendor. The situation turned grim when her parents and two brothers visited their native village on December 15. The student stayed back at home with her grandmother and a cousin.
This cousin, an e-rickshaw driver, had been residing with the family for the past six years. It is alleged that on December 18, he raped the young woman. Unable to cope with the trauma, the student consumed a poisonous substance on the evening of December 25.
The Heartbreaking Suicide Note
Following her death, the family found a photograph of a suicide note on her mobile phone, and the physical note was later recovered. In her final words, the student detailed the brutality she faced and explained her prolonged silence.
"The accused threatened to kill my father if I resisted or spoke out," the note stated. She explicitly absolved her parents and siblings of any blame for her extreme step, naming her cousin as the sole reason and demanding "severe punishment" for his actions.
Police Investigation and Manhunt
After consuming poison, the victim was first taken to a private hospital before being referred to Balrampur Hospital, where she eventually died. The accused cousin has been absconding since the incident and has switched off his mobile phone.
Despite the serious allegations, formal police proceedings were pending at the time of the report. DCP West Zone, Vishwajeet Srivastava, assured action, stating, "We have registered an FIR in the case and the arrest will be made soon." The case falls under the jurisdiction of the Para police station area in Lucknow.
