Madurai Police Booth Unusable: Stench, No Power, Mosquitoes

Madurai: Plagued by a stench of urine, a lack of power supply, and a rampant mosquito menace, the police traffic booth opposite the Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai has become unusable. This has forced traffic police officers to manage the chaotic flyover traffic directly on the streets without any shelter.

Booth Condition and Complaints

The police booth located on Panagal Road has turned into a spot for urination by commuters and patient attendants visiting the hospital. As a result, police personnel have stopped using the booth, leaving them with no place to rest. They also complained about a severe mosquito menace, as the booth is situated near a sewage canal.

Speaking to the Times of India, police personnel posted at the booth said, “We have been facing these problems for the past four months. Due to the ongoing underground drainage (UGD) work, there has been no power supply at the booth during the summer. We cannot stay inside the booth and are forced to step out and continue our duty outside without basic amenities. We have no shelter for the upcoming rainy days.”

“If the booth were operable, we could stay inside and regulate traffic using the speaker and microphone system,” the official added.

Traffic Challenges

The ongoing Goripalayam flyover project has worsened vehicular traffic congestion on Panagal Road. Since riders frequently violate traffic rules near the Government Rajaji Hospital, the deployment of police personnel at this stretch is essential. However, the current condition of the outpost makes police work extremely difficult.

A senior police official stated that they would look into the issue and resolve it soon.
