A significant crackdown on the illegal drug trade unfolded in Jaipur on Monday, resulting in a major seizure and arrests. In a coordinated effort, officers from the drug control department and the Hanumangarh police successfully intercepted a large consignment of prescription drugs being sold for misuse.
Major Haul of Controlled Substance
The joint operation led to the seizure of 13,400 capsules containing Pregabalin, a compound strictly regulated under the law. Authorities confirmed the arrest of two individuals directly linked to this illegal operation. The confiscated drugs have an estimated street value of Rs 2.3 lakh.
An official from the Food Safety and Drug Control Commissionerate explained that the accused were involved in the unlawful distribution of these capsules. The pills, meant for treating specific medical conditions, were being peddled as intoxicants for recreational abuse, bypassing all legal and medical channels.
Risks of Pregabalin Misuse
Pregabalin is a prescription medication authorized for treating serious health issues like neuropathic pain, epilepsy, and anxiety disorders. However, its misuse carries severe health risks. Medical professionals warn that side effects from unauthorized use can include depression, chronic fatigue, significant weight gain, muscle pain, and an increased risk of heart disease.
The official emphasized that diverting such potent medication from legitimate patients to the black market poses a dual threat: it deprives those in genuine need and creates new avenues for substance abuse.
State-Wide Crackdown Intensifies
State drug controller (I) Ajay Phatak stated that Monday's successful operation is a key part of a broader state initiative to dismantle networks involved in drug trafficking and narcotic activities. He revealed that directives have been issued to all assistant drug controllers and drug control officers across Rajasthan to ramp up their vigilance and operations.
These officials are mandated to work in close collaboration with police forces to identify, raid, and shut down illegal drug trade operations. "This seizure is a result of our sustained efforts to curb the menace of drug trafficking," Phatak noted.
In a public appeal, Phatak also urged citizens to play an active role in this fight. He requested people to come forward and share any credible information they might have regarding the illegal sale or distribution of banned drugs and narcotics within their communities. This collaborative approach between authorities and the public is seen as crucial for winning the battle against the drug trade.
