Arrest Made in Sundargarh District
A 40-year-old married man was arrested in Sundargarh district, Odisha, on Saturday for allegedly raping a 14-year-old mentally challenged girl multiple times. The minor is now approximately four months pregnant and is residing in a shelter home under official care, according to police.
Details of the Assault
Police stated that the accused, a neighbor of the survivor, allegedly assaulted the girl repeatedly when she was alone at home while her mother was away for work. The minor had previously become pregnant nearly two years ago, but the matter was not reported to the authorities at that time.
Incident Comes to Light
The latest case came to light on May 23 when the girl's mother took her to a local medicine shop seeking medication to terminate the pregnancy. The shopkeeper alerted the authorities, leading to intervention by the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), local officials, and police on May 24. The minor was first taken to a one-stop center in Rourkela and later shifted to a shelter home in Sundargarh.
Investigation and Arrest
During questioning, the girl's mother expressed suspicion about their neighbor. The accused was medically examined and, following interrogation, was arrested. Police confirmed that further investigation is underway.
