A 23-year-old man, allegedly mentally deranged, attacked his father with a cleaver in their home in Jamshedpur's Shyamnagar area late Friday night, suspecting him to be a ghost, police said.

The accused, identified as Nishant Singh, repeatedly struck his 56-year-old father, Karam Singh, with the weapon. Neighbors heard screams and rushed to help, alerting the police. The victim was initially taken to the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College Hospital (MGMMCH) but was later referred to the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ranchi due to his critical condition.

Officer-in-charge of Sidhgora police station, Faiz Ahmed, stated that the accused appears to be a deranged individual. During questioning, Nishant repeatedly claimed he attacked a ghost, not his father. Preliminary investigations reveal that Nishant has a history of alcohol and drug intoxication. Based on statements from family members and locals, it is suspected that the attack occurred after Nishant was denied money for substance abuse.
The accused has been detained, and further investigation is underway. The police are examining the suspect's mental health and possible substance abuse triggers.
