Man dies from burns after illegal firecracker factory blast in Kolkata

A tragic incident in the South 24 Parganas district has resulted in the death of a 55-year-old man, severely injured in an explosion at an illegal firecracker manufacturing unit. The victim, identified as Gourhari Ganguly from the Piyali area in Canning, passed away in the early hours of Sunday at MR Bangur Hospital.

Victim Succumbs to Critical Burns

Gourhari Ganguly suffered catastrophic injuries in the blast that occurred on Friday at the illicit factory located in Champahati. Hospital sources confirmed he had sustained nearly 100% burn injuries. His condition remained critical from the moment of admission. Despite the best efforts of the medical team, Ganguly could not be saved and died around 12.30 am on Sunday.

Condition of Other Injured Persons

The explosion left three other individuals injured. Kishan Adhikari is currently admitted to MR Bangur Hospital and is under close medical supervision. The two others, Biswajit Mondal and Rahul Pui, were taken to a private hospital near Panchasayar. Reports indicate that among the survivors, Rahul Pui's condition is stated to be the most critical.

Police Probe and Absconding Owner

In the aftermath of the incident, the owner of the illegal firecracker unit, Bidhan Naskar, has gone into hiding. Police investigations have revealed that Naskar did not possess any valid manufacturing licence for the operation. On Sunday, Inspector-in-Charge Ardhendu De Sarkar of the Baruipur police station revisited the blast site as part of the ongoing investigation. The authorities are intensifying their search for the absconding owner while examining the full scope of the illegal operation.

This incident highlights the grave dangers posed by unlicensed and unregulated firecracker manufacturing units, which often operate without adhering to basic safety norms, putting lives at constant risk.
