Coimbatore police arrested a 30-year-old man on Saturday for allegedly verbally abusing and physically assaulting a senior citizen woman during a heated argument between neighbours. The incident, which occurred on Friday night, stemmed from a dispute over noise made by playing children.
What Triggered the Altercation?
The conflict erupted in the Pullukkadu housing unit located in South Ukkadam. According to police from the Bazaar station, the trouble began when a group of children, which included the son of the accused, were playing loudly. C Janaki, a 69-year-old woman residing on the same floor, asked the children to lower their volume as it was causing a disturbance to other residents.
This intervention did not sit well with S Raja Sekar, the father of one of the children. Police officials stated that Raja, enraged by Janaki's questioning, got into a fierce altercation with her. The argument quickly escalated beyond harsh words.
The Assault and Injury
In a fit of anger, Raja Sekar allegedly threw a vegetable cutter (a kitchen utensil) at the elderly woman. The object struck Janaki on her head, resulting in a bleeding injury. The attack left the senior citizen wounded and in need of immediate medical attention.
Following the assault, Janaki was rushed to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital for treatment. She received care as an outpatient for the injuries sustained in the incident. After being treated, she proceeded to formally lodge a complaint against her neighbour at the Bazaar police station.
Legal Action and Arrest
Acting on the complaint, Bazaar police registered a case against S Raja Sekar. The charges were filed under several relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) as well as the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Woman Act. This legal framework is designed to provide stringent punishment for crimes against women.
The police swiftly took Raja into custody on Saturday. He was later produced before a judicial magistrate, who ordered him to be remanded in judicial custody. The arrest highlights the police's prompt action in a case involving violence against a senior citizen and a woman.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of how quickly minor neighbourhood disagreements can spiral into serious violence, resulting in legal consequences. It also underscores the importance of maintaining cordial relations and resolving disputes amicably within residential communities.
