Mumbai Man Arrested for Rs 5 Crore Extortion Plot Against Andhra MP Over RTI Data
The Andhra Pradesh Police, with assistance from Mumbai local police, arrested a Girgaon resident on January 10. The man allegedly blackmailed an MP from Andhra Pradesh. He threatened to leak controversial Right to Information data against the MP.
Extortion Plot and Robbery Details
Police identified the accused as Vrushant Wadke. He allegedly plotted to extort Rs 5 crore from the MP through four associates. These associates remain at large. Wadke obtained information against the MP through RTI. He then blackmailed the MP for money, promising not to share the data with central agencies.
After continuous phone harassment, the MP agreed to send his personal assistant to meet Wadke's associate in Mydukur, Andhra Pradesh. In August 2024, Wadke sent his associate Harshvardhan for the meeting.
During the meeting in Kadapa district, Harshvardhan and his men allegedly robbed the PA. They took Rs 70,000 at knifepoint. The police confirmed this robbery incident from last year.
Police Investigation and Legal Action
The Andhra Pradesh Police filed an FIR at Mydukur police station in August. They charged Wadke and four others under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. An Andhra police team traveled to Mumbai and arrested Wadke with help from VP Road police on January 9.
After completing legal formalities, authorities recorded the arrest on January 10. They produced Wadke before a local court in Mydukur. The investigation continues actively. Police are trying to apprehend Wadke's four associates who remain at large.
Authorities are also working to nab another accused in the case. Further investigation is ongoing to uncover all details of the extortion plot.
