Mysuru Temple Authority to Issue SOPs for Plastic Ban

The Shree Chamundeshwari Kshetra Development Authority is set to release standard operating procedures (SOPs) aimed at curbing the plastic menace and ensuring round-the-clock cleanliness atop Chamundi Hills. The authority manages the Sri Chamudeshwari temple, a prominent spiritual, religious, and tourist destination in Mysuru, and one of the highest revenue-generating muzrai temples in Karnataka. The temple attracts devotees throughout the year.

Despite the government's ban on single-use plastic materials at the hill shrine, heaps of cups, plates, and other plastic items continue to accumulate. The growing mounds of garbage have become a challenge due to a lack of coordination among muzrai, local bodies, and the forest department.

Following directives from Mysuru division regional commissioner Nitesh Patil, the development authority has decided to formulate SOPs to address this issue. Additional civic workers have been deployed alongside existing staff, and a thrice-weekly cleanliness drive has been initiated, covering the temple premises, staircases, parking lots, shops, and streets.
