The district and sessions court in Nagpur has sentenced Yogesh Rewatkar, a 22-year-old resident of Narkhed, to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment under Section 4(2) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act. In addition to the prison term, the court imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the convict. Should he fail to pay the fine, Rewatkar will be required to serve an additional six months of imprisonment.
Details of the Incident
The crime took place on July 30, 2023, when the accused lured the complainant's six-year-old son to the upper floor of his house. There, he committed an unnatural sexual act with the minor. Following the incident, a case was registered at the Narkhed police station under Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code and relevant provisions of the Pocso Act.
Investigation and Trial
Police sub-inspector Sarika Gurukar conducted a thorough investigation into the matter. She gathered evidence and filed a comprehensive chargesheet against the accused. During the trial, additional public prosecutor Kalpana Pandey represented the state and argued the case effectively, leading to the conviction and sentencing.
The court's decision underscores the stringent measures taken by the judiciary to protect children from sexual offenses. The sentence of 20 years' rigorous imprisonment reflects the severity of the crime and serves as a deterrent to potential offenders.
