Nagpur NGO President Arrested on Serious Abuse Charges
In a significant development in Nagpur, police have arrested Riyaz Fazil Qazi, the 48-year-old president of an NGO working with underprivileged children, following allegations of sexual abuse and religious coercion against three employees. The arrest occurred on Saturday night, and Qazi remains in police custody until April 23 as investigations intensify.
Extensive Police Searches Uncover NGO History
Twenty-four hours after the arrest, law enforcement authorities conducted thorough searches at Qazi's office located in the Zingabai Takli area of northwest Nagpur. The operation aimed to uncover the NGO's complete 16-year employee history, with police seizing numerous documents, financial records, bank account details, and electronic devices during the raid.
Senior Inspector Haresh Kalsekar of Mankapur police station confirmed that authorities will be writing to the charity commissioner to obtain comprehensive details about the NGO's registration status, funding sources, and activities conducted over the years. This formal request represents a crucial step in understanding the organization's operations and financial background.
Multi-Agency Investigation Underway
The case has attracted attention from multiple law enforcement agencies, with intelligence organizations and the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) conducting parallel investigations alongside local police. This multi-agency approach indicates the seriousness with which authorities are treating the allegations.
Investigators are now meticulously scanning through the NGO's complete staff list, paying particular attention to former employees who left the organization during its 16-year existence. A senior official involved in the investigation revealed, "The probe will encompass women employees who left the organisation in 16 years, why they quit, and whether they were harassed. We are trying to unearth what was happening inside the NGO."
Forensic Examination of Electronic Evidence
Police are conducting comprehensive reviews of CCTV footage from the NGO premises and have sent seized electronic gadgets to forensic laboratories for detailed analysis. The forensic examination aims to identify any sexually explicit content or religiously sensitive material that might provide evidence supporting the allegations.
The main complainant, a 23-year-old woman who served as the NGO's HR and administration head, has made serious allegations against Qazi. She claims he hugged and kissed her against her will, made her uncomfortable by insisting she adopt specific religious practices, unplugged CCTV cameras before embracing her, and even created a fake Instagram account using portions of their names to stalk female employees.
Additional Complaints Surface
Further complicating the case, the complainant's sister, who later joined the NGO, has come forward with additional allegations. She claims she was forced to adopt practices of another religion, including specific prayers and dress codes during field visits.
Sources indicate that the initial complainant became particularly upset with Qazi after he called a friend's mother an imposter and shared defamatory information about her and her family. This incident appears to have been a triggering factor in bringing the broader allegations to light.
Broader Context and Significance
This case has drawn significant attention because it follows similar allegations reported elsewhere in Maharashtra, suggesting potential patterns of abuse within certain organizational structures. The thorough investigation spanning 16 years of employee history represents an unprecedented effort to uncover systemic issues within the NGO.
As the investigation continues, authorities remain focused on building a comprehensive case that addresses all aspects of the allegations, from individual incidents of abuse to potential systemic problems within the organization's operations and culture.
