A high-level inquiry committee, formed on the directives of the Maharashtra State Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Commission, has commenced a detailed investigation into shocking allegations of the brutal assault of minor boys by personnel of the Jalalkheda police station in Nagpur.
Allegations of Illegal Detention and Brutality
The case surfaced after a formal complaint claimed that police personnel picked up the minors from Dindargaon village without any written complaint being on record at the police station. The boys were allegedly taken in a police vehicle to Jalalkheda police station, where they were illegally detained. According to the victims' accounts, they were then subjected to inhuman beatings with a leather belt. Disturbingly, the complaint also states that caste-based abuses were hurled at the minors during the assault.
Committee Records Statements, Visits Police Station
The inquiry committee, acting swiftly, visited Dindargaon village to record the statements of the affected minors and their parents. This step was crucial to gather first-hand accounts of the alleged incident. The team also conducted a visit to the Jalalkheda police station itself to collect additional information and evidence related to the case. Sources familiar with the preliminary findings have indicated that there appear to be serious procedural lapses on the part of the police involved.
Serious Lapses Found, Report Awaited
The SC/ST Commission has directed that the inquiry report be submitted without any delay, underscoring the gravity of the allegations. The probe is being conducted under the guidance of district women and child development officer Sunil Mesre. The committee members include district child protection officer Mustaq Pathan, child protection officer Sadhana Hatwar, and child development project officer Sanjay Tatte. The involvement of child protection officers highlights the focus on the welfare and rights of the minor victims. The investigation aims to establish the complete facts and ensure accountability for any misconduct or violation of law and human rights.
