In a significant blow to drug trafficking networks, the Narcotics Intelligence Bureau (NIB) of Tamil Nadu police carried out a massive destruction of seized narcotics, incinerating over two metric tonnes of ganja near Trichy this week.
Major Haul Incinerated in Thanjavur
The contraband, weighing a substantial 2,106 kilograms, was destroyed on Tuesday at a licensed medical waste disposal facility located in Ayodhipatti, near Sengipatti in Thanjavur district. The action was taken after obtaining necessary orders from the court.
The items put to the flames were seized during intensive anti-drug operations conducted by the NIB across various districts in the state. Alongside the bulk ganja, the destroyed narcotics also included 1.1 kilograms of ganja chocolate and 3.3 kg of opium, highlighting the diversity of illegal substances recovered.
Wide-Ranging Operations Yield Results
This destruction event is linked to a recent series of successful crackdowns. Police officials confirmed that 289 cases have been registered in connection with these seizures. The market value of the destroyed 2,106 kg of ganja alone is estimated to be around Rs 2 crore, underscoring the financial scale of the illicit trade being disrupted.
The incineration was overseen by P K Senthilkumari, the Inspector General of the Narcotics Intelligence Bureau. She was present at the site along with Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs) and inspectors from the specialized unit.
Year-Long Crackdown on Narcotics
The latest operation is part of a broader, sustained campaign against drugs in the region. According to data provided by the NIB, their efforts this year have led to substantial seizures and subsequent destruction of various narcotics.
The cumulative haul for the year so far includes staggering quantities:
- Approximately 29,738 kg of dry ganja
- 77.67 kg of hashish
- 104.2 kg of charas
- 2.59 kg of heroin
- 1 kg of diazepam
- 246.6 kg of ganja products
- 2.71 kg of methamphetamine
This comprehensive list illustrates the wide spectrum of illegal drugs being targeted by the bureau's operations.
The public destruction of such a large cache serves a dual purpose: it ensures the contraband is permanently taken out of circulation and sends a strong deterrent message to drug peddlers and syndicates. The NIB's actions reflect a continued commitment to combating the narcotics trade and safeguarding communities across Tamil Nadu.
