Varanasi Police's Operation Vajrapat Targets Criminal Digital Footprints
Operation Vajrapat: Curbing Crime via Digital Surveillance

Lucknow: The Varanasi Range Police have launched “Operation Vajrapat” to dismantle not just the physical networks of criminals but also their growing digital footprint. The campaign, spanning Jaunpur, Ghazipur and Chandauli, has led to the takedown of 554 social media profiles allegedly used to glorify crime and spread fear.

Operation Overview

Initiated under DIG Varanasi Range, Vaibhav Krishna, the operation targets the entire criminal ecosystem covering social, economic and digital linkages to curb the rise of gang culture and online intimidation.

Digital Surveillance Focus

A key focus has been digital surveillance. After technical scrutiny and coordination with platforms, 554 profiles of criminals were removed—250 from Ghazipur, 192 from Jaunpur and 112 from Chandauli. Officials said these accounts played a significant role in amplifying criminal influence and aiding extortion ecosystems.

Intelligence-Led Survey

In its first phase, police carried out an extensive intelligence-led survey, identifying 165 criminal groups involving 1,080 individuals. Detailed dossiers were prepared, mapping their criminal history, affiliations and digital activity.

Graded Legal Action

Based on threat perception, authorities have initiated graded legal action. While minor offenders are being counselled, habitual and serious offenders are facing FIRs, preventive action, and proceedings under the Goonda Control Act and Gangsters Act.

Asset Identification

Police have also begun identifying and initiating action against illegally acquired properties linked to such networks.

Suo Motu Action

Officers have been directed to act suo motu in cases where victims hesitate to file complaints due to fear.

Calling it a “multi-dimensional strike on crime,” an officer said that the idea is to build a comprehensive database for targeted action and sustained monitoring.
